How do I rip (copy) music from a CD?
Our system has Windows Media Player, which does this very easily. After you’ve put the disk in the machine:
- Open the program (Start => Programs =>Windows Media Player). The program icon looks like this

- Click the Rip tab to open that part of the program
- Your CD should come up in the window. If the CD can be read, your album information should pop up.
- Go to Tools = > Options. Click the Rip Music tab. You can click Change under Rip music to this location to save the files elsewhere, i.e. a folder in your folder on the server.
- You have many formatting choices. Windows Media or MP3 will work best. Apply your changes and click OK.
- Click the check boxes next to the songs you want to copy. Checking the box to the left of Title will rip them all.
- Click Rip Music just to the right of center near the top of the screen.
- The program will copy (or rip) your songs to the folder you set up and will convert them to the chosen format.
How can I make a CD or copy songs onto a CD?
We have Nero, which is one of the best and easiest-to-use programs out there for this kind of thing.
- Start with a blank CD. Almost any brand works fine, but I’ve had the best luck with Memorex, TDK, and Maxell. Some computers may be touchy with some brands. CD-RW disks are nice, because you can write and rewrite on them. However, they are very picky. Usually, only the machine you started recording on can be used to add or edit new information. And, CD-R disks are a lot cheaper if one goes bad or you make a mistake.
- Open the program (Start => Programs => Nero => Nero StartSmart).
- The instructions are pretty straightforward from there.
- Pick the disk type (in this case...CD) from the top drop-down menu
- Choose Audio from the icons across the top of the program window.
- Make Audio CD will create a CD that will play in a CD player (maybe not some older players)
- Make MP3 CD will create a CD that will hold the audio files to be played on a computer or MP3 player.
- An iPod will automatically convert the files in iTunes for use in the player.
- The next window allows you to locate your files. Navigate to the folder where they are stored and click to add them to the screen. A line along the bottom will let you know when you’ve reached the CD’s capacity.
- After you’ve copied the files you want, click Burn. The program will make the CD for you.
